Otherwise这个词想必大家都不陌生。远在备考GRE之前，大家应该就已经相互认识了。对下面这个句子的otherwise，大家必然是秒懂的：
The evil of class and race hatred must be eliminated while it is stillrudimentary/embryonic state; otherwise, it may grow to dangerous proportions.
这是一道六选二句子等价题，空直接给大家填好了。分号前句说的是尽管仇恨在萌芽阶段，但是仇恨必须被消灭。Otherwise在这里的意思是“否则”，“要不然”，换成更好理解的语言就是“如果不这么做”。
所以在这句话中，我们看到otherwise，就要能预测到，后面要说的是如果不消灭仇恨会产生的后果。我们一读，果然是这样，分号后面说的是，如果不消灭仇恨，仇恨就会增加到一个很危险的比例。
很多同学对otherwise的掌握大概就是到了这个程度，然后拍拍胸脯觉得自己OK了。

于是这部分同学做到下面这道题的时候就会有点懵：

同学们读完题干，可能会发现只有一件事确定：冒号前后取同。至于冒号前后都在讲什么，一头雾水。
狼有等级森严的社会制度，说明小狼狼都很乖巧吗？有暴君，大家都乖巧地不敢动吗？Otherwise在这里又是个啥意思？否则？如果不这么做？前面也没说要怎么做呀？
会一头雾水的同学，就是对于GRE中otherwise的另一个意思不熟悉，那就是：本来！这时，otherwise就暗含了一个对比取反的含义。
大家可以看一下下面两个朗文词典中的例句：
This spoiled an otherwise excellent piece of work.
（这就把本来很出色的一件作品毁掉了。）
Their arrival livened up an otherwise dull afternoon.
（他们的到来使得原本沉闷的午后变得愉快起来。）
在第一句中excellent和spoil取反，本来好的作品现在不好了；第二句中liven up 跟dull取反，本来沉闷的下午后来不闷了。
现在我们再来读这道题就清楚很多了，狼的社会本来是等级分明的，那么一定是不偶尔有太分明的等级，比如以下犯上。一空结合前面的populist代表平民的，表达的就是来自平民阶层的不满、抗议，也就是以下犯上。
有了冒号之前的矛盾关系，冒号之后也就很清楚了，仍然是要表达以下犯上的含义，D选项集体推翻、共同推翻也就很容易选出来了。
